One change from some of the other shows in the Sister series is that this one is in a theater-in-the-round configuration. From that moment on, the humor is irresistible. It is harder than it looks, requiring impeccable comedic timing, improvisational skill and an ability to stay in character while orchestrating and maintaining a high degree of audience participation. It is a high-spirited high-wire act, and like a good tennis match, you can’t help but wonder where the ball is going to land as she and the audience banter back and forth. This (almost) one-woman show requires much of the lead, and Fennell is impressive to watch as she interacts with the audience. In her 10th year in this series at Stages, Denise Fennell returns playing Sister, a brassy and bossy nun who can teach Catholic doctrine while cracking a joke.
